There Are Four Components To A Book or Screenplay

A.) Concept

B.) Plot And Structure

C.) Scenes

D.) Characters

Character Development

To sell a book or screenplay, your characters will have testify in their own behalf regarding their ability to attract, involve, and elicit empathy from the reader - audience. The foundation for your characters will have to be the visible motivation to achieve the goal, the Maguffin. You will have to create empathy and identification with the characters, the obstacles and conflicts that drive and motivate them, all based on the outwardly visible goal of the quest or journey.

Three Facts Of Character Makeup

Book Background: The history of the character, everything about him - her, before their being in the screenplay. Their personal backstory.

Physical Characteristics: Appearance, age, gender, any disabilities or abilities.

Personality: What they are like, intelligence level, psychological and emotional.

The importance of all this is self-evident. For instance, the Hero of Predator is ex military and/or special forces of some sort, now a mercenary, physically tough and rough, merciless, and almost without fear (or high in self confidence). This is not the best character for Bridges Of Madison County, or Tootsie, right?

Once you figure out who your characters are and what their capabilities might be, they will have to follow those rules, and will actually start to do things you hadn't thought of, will almost seem to take on life and independence. You will need to develop all this in great detail in order to figure out how and why the character fits into your own quest of moving the screenplay story forward. It MUST relate to the play.

Creating A Book Hero or Heroine, Lead Character

The lead character is the pivotal point of the action and emotion you're trying to generate in the screenplay. Everything revolves around your Hero - Heroine. You must figure out a lead whose completely synchs with your story concept, and whose personality and abilities will carry it through, like a motor driving the vehicle forward into the story. Your audience - readers must find that character to be original and attractive in some way, they will have to identify with, and and have empathy for him - her. They must become emotionally involved with the story and character.

Your lead will be in part designed by the plot, what's needed to move it forward. But what if you have no idea who you need?

First, certain traits are created by the plot and story concept itself. What traits does the lead absolutely need to have. Research what your story is about: Ancient Rome, the Templars, the UN and its charter, etc., and then the character will start to be revealed to you.

The next most important thing is to figure out how to make the audience relate to the character. Identification is the key to vicarious emotion, which is what the audience wants.
