There Are Four Components To A Book or Screenplay
A.) Concept
B.) Plot And Structure
C.) Scenes
D.) Characters
Possible Sources For Book or Story ConceptsPossible open sources for book, fiction, or story concepts are adaptations of novels, plays, and short stories. These are good sources if your abilities are not in the area of developing plots, but you do have the ability to write screenplays. You would "simply" adapt the original work to a screenplay format. Easy, right? All you have to do is buy the rights from Robert Ludlum, or other, and you're off. You might pursue the rights to an old work that is still more or less contemporary, or just use such a story as your starting point for your own extrapolation. However, bear in mind that great literature doesn't always translate into a great movie. Symbolism, emotion, and poetic description do not make the transition to film easily. You will need to develop your own style, texture, plot and structure, mood, and characters. However, if you're sticking with an original work you have the right to use, do not take too many liberties with artistic license and change the thing for the worse, or everyone will be mad at you and no one will go see the movie. Especially do NOT fuck with the mythology of a beloved, iconic character, like, say, Superman. Another source for adaptation might be a true news story, if you can find one accurately reported. An example might be something about, say, an assassination, a bank heist, a caper, a sensational murder or trial. You get the idea. However, a contemporary news drama may not translate into a movie format, lack the ability to develop be resolved, and might be more suitable as a documentary. With a true story, there's not much room for poetic license to make your point. You may have to acquire the rights to such stories from the principals. On the commercial side of this question, docudramas are very popular for television writing.
